Paul Hunt — The Global Maths Tutor

Meet Paul

Hello everyone.

My name is Paul Hunt and I am The Global Maths Tutor.

I know only too well what a huge commitment it can be, both in terms of time and expense, when it comes to seeking a tutor for your child.

As is the case in all professions, there are some incredible mathematics tutors out there, and I applaud each and every one of them for the wonderful and committed work they do on behalf of their tutees.

However, some tutors can be less effective than others, and even if that is simply due to the tutor lacking experience, that is of little comfort when your child is making no progress and your hard-earned money essentially seems wasted.

So, do allow me to try to allay any such concerns that you might have by speaking briefly of the experiences, achievements and successes that support my claim to be a first-class tutor for your child.

Personal Biography

Since gaining qualified teacher status in 1995, I have worked as a full time teacher of mathematics.

With over 30 years of teaching experience across both state and independent sectors, I have built a deep and broad expertise in mathematics education at all levels. Repeated appraisals of my teaching have led to a judgement of outstanding.

Externally, I have been an examiner (at both GCSE and A-Level) with three separate examination boards (Edexcel, OCR and AQA) — a role I intend to continue at both levels. I have also been highly commended for the quality of my examining work.

I am the principal author of 4 books of exam practice papers for AS-Level and A-Level mathematics (Edexcel and AQA), published by Oxford University Press. I have also co-authored a series of 4 GCSE maths revision workbooks (Foundation and Higher level for Edexcel and AQA) as part of an elite, hand-picked team of professionals.

In between authoring duties, I have also undertaken proofreading and answer-checking duties for mathematics textbooks for Oxford University Press, Collins and other publishers.

I have also written Teach Further Maths — a comprehensive suite of PowerPoint presentations for the teaching of A-Level Further Mathematics, covering the entire Core Pure content for Edexcel, AQA, OCR and MEI. My presentations are used in schools across the UK and globally.

I am also the writer and creator of Maths Trumps, published by Tarquin Publications — a card game used by primary and secondary schools to enhance the teaching and enjoyment of mathematics.

Teaching Experience

I have taught all levels and abilities with success, up to and including A-Level. I was the senior teacher of A-Level Further Mathematics at my previous school for a number of years, and I am proud that my A-Level Further Mathematics students achieved the best results of all A-Level subjects at the school for the last 2 years that I was there.

I still teach all ages and abilities from the 11–18 age group, although my teaching timetable is largely dominated by GCSE and A-Level Mathematics (and Further Mathematics), due to my expertise at this level.

My teaching, across all levels, has brought me joy and satisfaction for decades, and my passion for teaching the subject that I love has never waned. My undying enthusiasm is often noted by students, whose feedback at times has been humbling.

Current Situation

Aside from my teaching duties, I have recently completed a further suite of GCSE revision titles for Oxford University Press, which are now published. I am currently in discussions with prospective publishers regarding other exciting writing opportunities. Over the next few years, I expect to continue classroom teaching in a part-time role, alongside my various writing and examining commitments.

I am also doing some online tuition (for which I have received high praise) and I am subsequently devoting more hours to this, offering my services to students globally via this very website.

Typical Lesson Structure

Lessons with Paul are 1 hour long and take place online. Microsoft Teams is usually our chosen platform, although alternatives (e.g. Zoom) can also be considered.

The first lesson includes a short consultation with you and/or your child to discuss any known weaknesses, concerns or general queries. Paul will have a copy of the relevant syllabus displayed on the screen so that topics can be highlighted and an initial plan for your child can be created.

Every lesson is designed with care and is prepared with full consideration of the exact needs of your child.

Lessons are constructed so that they look colourful, dynamic and appealing. Their aim is to quickly capture the interest of your child.

Plenty of varied question practice is provided in lessons, and older topics are reviewed at regular intervals so that knowledge is maintained and kept fresh in your child's mind.

Live annotated notes are provided as each lesson progresses, and a .pdf file of the lesson is emailed to your child, along with a short homework, once the lesson has ended.

In the gaps between lessons, Paul welcomes emails from your child with questions about the homework or any other mathematical concepts that might be causing concern.
